KQED Forum on Mission Moratorium

On July 24, SF Tenants Union spokesperson Scott Weaver debated a pro-developer representative on the November ballot measure for a moratorium on luxury housing development in the Mission District. The Mission is currently going through what is called hyper-gentrification, and affordable housing is being lost at a rate that not seen since that last tech boom. The SF Tenants Union supports this legislation and, as member of the Plaza 16 Coalition, believes that the City must be given the chance to develop a plan to address the housing crisis in ways that are accountable to the working-class and people of color that have historically lived in the Mission. The City must both protect existing rent-controlled housing and build more affordable housing than it currently is. Building more luxury housing will not solve this eviction and displacement crisis. That is why we support the Mission moratorium ballot initiative.
